It was his first job after graduate school. He worked as a research analyst for a mid-sized investment firm in Boston. He had interviewed for the job at a career fair during his last year of school. It was an established company that appeared to be poised for growth. During the interview his boss spoke highly of the company and the opportunity for advancement and high income within a few years. It seemed like a great match.

The Bond Is Broken: Reasons to NOT make a counter-offer

So, you’ve learned one of your employees has interviewed and been offered a position at another company. You might be tempted to throw extra money or benefits on the table to keep him. There are several reasons against making a counter-offer.

Flight Risk: Your employee has clearly made a decision to leave your nest. If he stays based on a counter-offer, can you really count on him to be a “team player” after he demonstrated a lack of loyalty to your company?
