Guidelines For A Successful Interview

Confidence

The key to any first interview is “confidence,” and part of that confidence is derived from being well-prepared for your interview.

Make a list of why you would like the position as well as why you would be an asset and good match for the organization and position.  Review that list and practice speaking positively about your strengths and skills.

Here are simple Do’s and Don’ts to assist you in landing that position of your dreams.

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare.

  1. DO your homework.  Research the company, get solid directions, make sure resume is printed, and lay out your most professional interview attire ahead of time.
  2. DO plan and ask well-thought out questions.  Make the questions meaningful. These questions will speak volumes about you and your interest in understanding the position.
  3. DO sell to the opening that the client has available. Express interest. Ask for the job.

You have a small window of opportunity where the interviewer will make the decision if they want to hire you or not. Do not waste this valuable time.

  1. DON'T focus on “advancement." Focus on the need at hand and emphasize “growth, challenge and opportunity” rather than advancement.
  2. DON'T get too personal or chummy and do not get caught up in talking about negative aspects of a former company, position, managers etc.
  3. DON'T initiate discussion of salary, benefits and time off. Use this time to sell yourself and discover aspects of the position.
